Military Careers

Most military branches offer the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). The ROTC is a college program that helps college students become officers in the military. ROTC programs offer college financial assistance and guaranteed career placement in the military.

Another option for students that want to pursue opportunities in the military and go to college is attending a service academy. These academies are highly competitive and offer full tuition paid, including books, room and board, and medical/dental care. When you graduate from a military academy, you will have a Bachelor of Science degree in a specified field. Graduates must serve five years in the respective branch of their service academy as an officer. 

In order to be considered for admission to one of the five service academies, you must meet the criteria in the following areas:

• High school academic rigor and performance
• SAT or ACT test scores
• Extracurricular activities (including sports)
• Experience in leadership and community service
• A congressional letter of recommendation (varies from service academy)

Reserve  

Military reserve programs are offered within each military branch (with the exception of the United States Space Force). Joining the reserves will give you the same training as all enlistments, but your commitment is part time. As a reservist, you’re required serve one weekend a month and participate in a two-week training each year. Reservists may also be called upon to serve alongside full-time, active members of the military –when necessary. This allows you the opportunity to attend college, pursue a civilian career, while also serving your country and continually developing your personal character and career skills. You will also be eligible for other benefits that come with serving in the military, depending where you serve.

National Guard

There are two National Guard programs, Army National Guard and Air National Guard. Both are other part-time service options and allow members to serve their communities and state, as each National Guard unit reports to the governor of their state. Members may also serve to protect the United States in times of conflict or in light of a natural disasters and may be called to serve alongside full time servicemen and women when necessary. Like serving in the Reserves, members of the National Guard can attend college and have civilian jobs. When serving, training or deployed, the members of the National Guard are paid well, in addition to the opportunities provided for career training and other benefits.
